Good-Bye Ethel

It's never easy saying good-bye. I had to do that this weekend. I had to say good-bye to Ethel. Who is Ethel? Ethel was our 1967 Split Window VW bus. We purchased Ethel eight years ago with all good intentions of restoring her to her original beauty. We tagged her and drove her around for a bit and just generally enjoyed looking at her. We had a piece of history in our garage.

I named her Ethel. When we started looking around for a VW bus years ago, we looked at one for sale - in fact the exact same color, but not near as good a shape - and the owner said, "By the way - her name is Lucy". We decided Lucy was not for us. Chaz & I then went to a local VW show and were walking around when I spotted Lucy's exact twin and even better, a FOR SALE sign in the window. We looked at it and decided we had to have it and I stated - THIS HAS TO BE ETHEL!!!!!

As time went by, things in our lives changed, sometimes drastically - we eventually had to come to the decision that we were never going to restore Ethel and that we should consider selling her. I fought it for a long time and finally came to grips with the decision that, yes, we need to sell her to someone that will restore her.

I hope it works out for her. We had her in the garage for a long time, but when we bought our Suburban and definitely did not want to park it outside (ha ha - we named the Suburban Bart - it's just something we do), we bought a custom fit cover for Ethel and parked her out back in a nice graveled spot. I've begun making plans on what to now do with that spot - but I know one thing - it looks awfully empty.

So, Good-Bye Ethel - it was fun while you were here just to look inside and out at what used to be a unique vehicle a long time ago. I will miss you...
